Colours

While the earthy colours and pastel hues of 2018 are still en vogue, in 2019 you can expect colour to come with a big dose of luxe and a grown-up edge. Pastels are all about subtlety, with bronze and other contrasting hues having their moment, too. These warmer tones will be contrasted with misty greys, sage greens and pale blues. Pops of black along with brighter colours will appear among this palette, with deep reds for the brave. Earthy colours are still in the mix and should be paired with contrasting colours. Subdued corals, blushed oranges, dirty peaches and rosy burgundies will also come into play.

A combo of visual and sensory texture is a must

It looks as though texture will be king in interiors come 2019. So you can rest assured, your love affair with marble and terrazzo will continue – but prepare to push the envelope. Both visual texture and sensory texture will be mainstays in decoration and will continue to be seen in everything. Sensory texture will come through via matte finishes on metal, timber and ribbed or scalloped glass. Wallpaper, such as grasscloth or woven materials will also provide texture to interiors. Just be prepared for visitors to want to touch and feel it!

Decor and homewares will be the centre of attention

If 2018 was the year to use decor and homeware to showcase personal style, then 2019 is the year you’ve figured out what that style is and you’re ready to go one step further. Mixing and matching new and vintage pieces to create a story is going to continue to be popular, it’s finding unique items that will raise the bar. Unique handmade items will be big as we are constantly looking for a connection to the objects that we buy. Coloured glass objects or

textured glass objects like vases or decorative boxes will be a must-have.

Matte black is the new grey

Nothing creates a sense of drama better than black. Expect to see bold, high-contrast designs all over your Instagram feeds in 2019, as matte black moves from fashion and beauty into homewares and interiors. Lighting, seating, home decor objects and sideboards are all key pieces you can introduce to reference the trend. This one is likely to be with us for a long time.

Less is more – minimalism and clean lines

As minimalism continues to blaze a clutter-free path through the interiors world, it is creating a demand for clean lines and a sense of openness across the whole house. Where once we favoured the piece de resistance of a room to be a statement furniture item, minimalism takes a hold when it comes to furniture in 2019. Furniture is becoming more minimal but still with a need for comfort. In the kitchen, this is taking shape through a no upper cabinet trend. If the idea of less storage in the kitchen has you panicking quietly (or loudly) inside, a popular option in future-proof kitchen remodels is to include an armoire. Staying in the kitchen, bold colours on both appliances and cabinetry is another trend coming to a kitchen renovation near you.

GOLD, GOLD and more GOLD

This metallic finish has had a revamp and it is predicted that it is going to come at us in a major way in 2019. With finishes covering gold patinas, black gold and bright golds being paired with raw natural finishes and high-end appliances, gold has never looked so good.

Go Green

Will indoor plants ever go out of style? Nope. Big things are predicted for the Pilea peperomioides, the Chinese Money plant, as well as plants with patterned leaves are about to become a big hit. If you don’t have confidence in your own green thumb, a high-quality artificial plant is the answer. These days artificial plants are indistinguishable from the real thing and beyond a casual dusting require absolutely no gardening skills at all.

Happy decorating, and remember, trends are inspiring and act as a guide when you are about to decorate or update a space. However, the most important design expert you can ever bring on board to a project is you! Decorate your space with items that are valuable to you, maybe they remind you of good times or are just beautiful to you. Trust yourself and enjoy the space you create!
